Welcome to the Beginning

OK…  so for several years now I have joked about writing a book on how to eat out for free.  It isn’t because I do it myself, it is simply because after 15 years in the restaurant business, I have seen just about every trick there is to get a free meal.  I thought maybe writing a book would release stress instead of slamming their heads into the table, but never had the time or discipline to actually write one.  Of course the slamming of heads never happened, but I can’t tell you how many times I wished it.  Instead, like the rest of the restaurant staff in the country, I just smiled and gave them the free meal.  Why? an amateur might ask…  Because in the corporate restaurant world, if a customer writes a complaint letter or e-mail, the company will send them free gift cards anyway – and usually for more than the meal they are trying to get for free at the moment.  So, I, along with the other thousands of frustrated restaurant people, just suck it up and let them win.

A friend of mine gave me the idea of doing a blog so I could release the stress a little at a time without having to use spell check or putting enough words on a piece of paper to qualify for a book.  My goal is to invite others to vent here as well.  You can send me an e-mail and I will post it on the site.  For those of us in the business, we might be able to use this as a support group without paying for a counselor.  For those who are not in the business, please feel free to use the stories as opportunities to get free food yourself.  I have called the site “101 ways to eat out for free”, but I am sure as I get at least 3 or 4 new tricks a week, it could add up to be much more than 101.

Although I can probably recite 101 ways today, I am going to just add a couple at a time.  The reason is two-fold.  First, I am too lazy to sit down and type them all out –  and second, my memory is horrible, unlike my wife who can remember when she was a baby in the crib (sidebar – sorry), and I want to give you the story as accurately as possible (especially for those of you who are going to use the idea yourself).  My goal is to post by Thursday each week.  Besides being lazy, I tend to get distracted easily and I am definitely impatient.  Those two “opportunities” as my wife calls them (another sidebar – sorry), will most likely cause me to not stick to a schedule.  I may post 1 a day, or I may post one a week.  We will see how it goes.
